Evaluation of Priming Treatment with Repetitive Water Deficit for Enhancing Stress Tolerance in Petunia×hybrida

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of priming treatments utilizing stress memory systems to enhance water deficit stress tolerance in Petunia ×hybrida. The priming treatments were repeated four times using a water deficit-recovery process, and two levels of priming intensity were applied (Priming1: 100 mL water, Priming2: 50 mL water followed by water deficit). After the priming treatments, the plants were subjected to water deficit stress for five days by withholding irrigation to evaluate the enhancement of their tolerance. The results showed that under water deficit stress, the shelf life of plants in Priming2, which had a higher priming intensity, was extended by approximately 25 hours compared to the control. This suggests that the repetitive water deficit priming treatment successfully enhanced tolerance in petunia. The study confirms the potential of priming techniques to improve environmental stress tolerance in ornamental plants. Further research on priming effects under various environmental stress conditions are expected to contribute to the development of practical technologies for enhancing drought tolerance in floricultural crops.
