Abstract

The paniculate Korean deutzia (Deutzia paniculata Nakai) and Korean pearl bush (Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore) are rare flowering shrubs native to Korea, with white blooms appearing in May–June and April–May, respectively. These plants hold high conservation and ornamental value, necessitating their development as horticultural crops. This study examined the growth responses of these species under plug seedling production, focusing on plug tray cell size, medium composition, and fertilization levels to establish an effective propagation system. For the paniculate Korean deutzia, smaller plug tray cells resulted in poorer growth, whereas the best growth was observed in the 105-cell tray, based on plant height, leaf length and width, and fresh shoot and root weight. A medium with a 20:80 ratio of peat moss to perlite produced the best growth, whereas 100% perlite resulted in the poorest growth. For the Korean pearl bush, the best seedling growth occurred in media with 100:0 and 75:25 ratios of peat moss to perlite, with poorer shoot and root growth observed in 100% perlite. Additionally, increased fertilization levels resulted in improved shoot growth and chlorophyll content, with the most effective treatment being irrigation with 6.24 g of Hyponex (N:P:K = 20:20:20) per plug tray during the nursery period for high-quality seedling production. Therefore, seedling growth was best when using a medium with a 20:80 ratio of peat moss and perlite in a 105-hole plug tray in the paniculate Korean deutzia, and when applying Hyponex 6.24g during the nusery period in media with 100:0 or 75:25 ratios in the Korean pearl bush.
