Analysis and Comparison of Volatile Components in Essential Oils of the Aster Species using HS-SPME-GC-MS

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the volatile components of the essential oils from 11 species of genus Aster native to Korea. Asteraceae are distributed worldwide and have been used in Korea as ingredients for food and traditional medicine. In this experiment, essential oils from aerial parts of 11 species of the genus Aster were used to compare fragrance profiles. Essential oils from aerial parts of 11 species of genus Aster were extracted by simultaneous steam distillation extraction (SDE) apparatus and the essential oils were analyzed by Headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The volatile components in the essential oils from 11 species were identified, comprising 80 to 95% of the total components. A total of 65 volatile components were identified in the essential oil from aerial parts of 11 species of the genus Aster. Identified functional groups were aldehydes, esters, phenylpropanoids, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and ketones. Among the identified components, the most abundant functional group was sesquiterpenes. This study provides foundational data for the industrial utilization of genus Aster native to Korea.
