Abstract

For stable production of high quality cut flowers, it is necessary to improve the quality and extend the production period of cut flowers by improving the cultivation environment. In this experiment, to select artificial medium suitable for the cultivation of the domestic Freesia 'Sunny Gold', four different medium (perlite:peatmoss (v/v) = 100:0, 80:20, 50:50, and 20:80) were treated. On September 30, 2022, the mother bulbs and bulblets were planted and grown under nutrient solution of EC 1.2 dS・m-1 and pH 6.0. The rate of sprouting, early growth characteristics, cut flower quality, and bulb propagation were investigated according to the nutrient medium type. Early growth characteristics was examined 7 weeks after planting, and cut flower quality was examined from January 27 to February 15, 2023. The peatmoss mixed medium had a faster rate of sprouting than the perlite medium, and the highest percentage of sprouting was done in the 20:80 (v/v) until the 5 weeks after planting, but by the 7 weeks, the rate of sprouting was close to 100% in all medium compositions. Early growth characteristics including plant height, leaf length, and leaf width was the best in the 50:50 (v/v) and 80:20 (v/v). The number of days from planting to flowering was the fastest 121 days in the perlite medium(100:0, v/v), but there was no significant difference among the medium types. The growth and flowering characteristics such as plant height, leaf length, leaf width, leaf number, stem thickness, flower diameter and weight of cut flower were the best in 80:20 (v/v) medium. When the bulb rot rate of each type of nutrient medium was examined, it was found to be higher as the perlite content decreased, but it was still as low as 6.7% in the 80:20 (v/v) medium. Also, bulblets did not decay in any of the medium. The bulb propagation rate was the best in the perlite medium(100:0, v/v).
