Abstract

Lilies, which are crucial in ornamental horticulture, possess considerable genetic diversity but lack a comprehensive understanding of meiotic recombination mechanisms, especially in interspecific hybrids. The primary objective of this study is to elucidate such mechanisms and increase genetic diversity through abiotic stress-induced chromosomal recombination. Currently, most commercially available lily varieties are interspecific hybrids with limited genetic variability due to preferential chromosome pairing during meiosis. Thus, our research aims to investigate the effect of abiotic stress factors, such as temperature variations, chemical treatments, and epigenetic drugs, on meiotic recombination frequencies and chromosomal distribution. We utilize Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) to rapidly screen interspecific hybrid offspring and assess variability in meiotic recombination landscapes following stress treatments. This process involves the collection and phenotypic characterization of diploid and triploid Oriental x Trumpet lily varieties, interspecific crosses, and subsequent GISH analysis to confirm hybridization success. Furthermore, we are conducting ongoing observations on meiotic recombination processes in hybrid lilies and optimizing abiotic stress factor treatments. This interdisciplinary approach holds great promise for enhancing genetic diversity in lilies, ultimately contributing to advancements in floriculture research and breeding practices.
