Topophysis Influences the Quality of Rooted Cuttings in Cut Rose ‘Antique Curl’

Abstract

The success of Korean rose flower production relies on providing farmers with uniform cuttings of high quality. This study investigated the influence of topophysis by examining the biological characteristics of cuttings and their rooting and shoot growth characteristics according to cutting collection node in cut rose 'Antique Curl'. One flowering stem provided eight cuttings (Level 1 to 8) from the 1st node with a 5-leaflet leaf (L 1) to the 8th node (L 8) orderly. Cutting propagation was done in the greenhouse of the University of Seoul from April 24, 2023, for 52 days. As for cutting materials, the leaf area and dry matter were 1.8 times higher in the upper three nodes (level 1 to 3) than that of the level 7 and 8. The upper cutting materials (L 1 to 3) showed better performance in photosynthesis, with 1.4 times higher performance than lower cutting materials (L 7 to 8). Total nitrogen content and axillary buds in the upper cutting materials (L 1 to 3) were 25% more and three times higher, respectively. Cutting efficiency decreased as the cutting node was low, with poor rooting and shooting performances. Lower cutting materials (L 7 to 8) exhibited etiolation and chlorosis in the leaves more rapidly than those observed in the upper cutting materials (L 1 to 3). Revealed a significantly positive correlation between leaf area, nitrogen content, and axillary bud size, indicating their strong association with cutting quality. These results conclude that stem topophysis directly influences the quality of rooted rose cuttings. Furthermore, using cuttings with optimal leaf age and vigorous axillary buds is deemed beneficial for the standardized production of rooted cutting.
