New Variety ‘Deep Red’ Interspecific Hybrid in Genus Echeveria

A new variety of Echeveria spp. ‘Deep Red’ was developed at Cactus & Succulent Research Institute, Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services in 2019. Echeveria agavoides var. prolifera and Echeveria chihuahuaensis ‘Ruby Blush’ were crossed in 2014 and we got 33 interspecific seedlings from this combination. After pedigree selection from 2014 to 2016, 3 breeding lines, GE14037-10, GE14037-15, and GE14037-16, had been tested specific characteristics from 2017 to 2018 and the one breeding line GE14037-15 was finally selected in 2019 and named as ‘Deep Red’. ‘Deep Red’ cultivar has strong yellow green (143A) base colored leaves which shows widely dark red (59A) tinted around the tip on both sides of the leaf. The number of leaves per plant was 38.6 and leaf shape showed obovate with the acuminate end. Leaf size was 3.3 cm long, 2.1 cm wide, and 7.3 mm thick and fleshly. ‘Deep Red’ makes almost stemless and mostly solitary rosette, producing 0.4 branch per plant, and it shows 3.8 cm high and 7.7 cm wide. In cultivation test it makes high acceptability among growers with attractive color and vigorous growing characteristics within 8 months from rooted leaf cuttings. It is easy to propagate ‘Deep Red’ variety not only from leaves but also by beheading which forces more offsets to develop.
