Breeding of a Grafted Cactus Astrophytum spp. ‘Aurora Gem’

Abstract

The new cultivar of Astrophytum spp. ‘Aurora Gem’ was developed at Cactus and Succulent Research Institute, Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services in 2020. GA113013-3 and GA103119-2 were crossed in 2013 and we got 5 seedlings. GA133126-4 had been selected among 2 breeding lines from 2014 to 2017 and it had tested for specific characteristics from 2018 to 2020. One cultivar was finally selected through the test of specific characters in 2020 and named as ‘Aurora Gem’. This cultivar has very small white wolly hair on green (141B) and yellow green (144C) color surface. It has globose stem with 7 - 8 ribs and grayish brown spines on the body. The plant height and diameter were 4.6 cm and 4.8 cm after 10 months from grafting, respectively. Offsets are produced by stem cutting, and it has excellent productivity.
