Changes in Photosynthesis by Leaf Age in Rosa hybrida ‘Vital’

Abstract

To understand the potential of rose cutting propagation efficiency, we measured photosynthetic rate (Pn) by leaf age in Rosa hybrida ‘Vital’, and analyzed the correlation between Pn and SPAD values at flowering shoots regardless of node position as well. The conditions of photosynthesis measurement were 600 μmol・m-2・s-1 PPFD, 22°C AT, 60% RH, and 400 μmol·mol-1 CO2 by using the portable photosynthesis system (Li-6800, Li-COR). The Pn by leaf age peaked around 20 to 30 days after unfolding in five-leaflet leaves, and 23-day-old leaves showed 3.4 times higher in Pn (14.2 μmol・m-2・s-1) than 66-day-old leaves (4.2 μmol・m-2・s-1). At the developing phase of shoots visualizing the petal color between the sepals, the Pn was positively correlated with SPAD values (r = 0.77**). Of course the Pn and SPAD values showed significant differences among the leaves from a different node in the same flowering shoot. As a result, leaf age affecting photosynthesis can be a key indicator of rose cutting propagation efficiency evaluation.
