Employment of Expressed Sequence Tag-derived Sequence Repeats (EST-SSR) Markers to Analyze Genetic Diversity among Lilium Species

Abstract

Lilium is in high demand and valuable ornamental crop throughout the world, however, the genetic diversity and genetic conformation among the Lilium species for breeding research have not been intensively conducted. In this study, we employed previously established expressed sequence tag-derived sequence repeats (EST-SSRs) markers to observe genetic dissimilarities or distances among 16 different wild Lilium species. Polymorphic information content (PIC) values of three selected EST-SSR markers ranging from 0.80 to 0.93 were employed here. Selected markers showed in total 89 alleles among 16 species. The number of alleles ranged from three to seven. Selected markers divided 16 species into four groups. And species within each group were wild species collected from similar regions throughout the world, therefore, indicating a clear correlation between genetic conformation and the geographical location of species. Employment of molecular markers such as EST-SSR markers can accelerate the genetic study of Lilium species that can be used as breeding materials in ornamental crops breeding programs.
