Initial Growth and Physiological Responses of Three Fern Native to Korea according to PPFD

Abstract

Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) in the light environment, it is an important factor for healthy condition and photosynthesis in plants under indoor LED lighting. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of light intensity on the initial growth and physiological of three fern native to Korea (Cheilanthes argentea, Woodsia polystichoides, Davallia mariesii). The light environments treatments used were of five PPFD levels (0, 7, 15, 40, 65 µmol m-2・s-1) and light irradiation time was set to 16/8 (day/night), and it was carried out for 2 months. The net photosynthetic rate (Pn) was measured every month. And biomass, carotenoid and chlorophyll contents were measured in the last month. Total biomass of C. argentea were highest in 40, 65 µmol m-2・s -1, and Pn was highest in 65 µmol m-2・s-1. Total biomass and Pn of W. polystichoides tended to be higher for 40, 65 µmol m-2・s-1, but total carotenoid and chlorophyll contents were lowest in 65 µmol m-2・s-1. In the case of D. mariesii, as the PPFD increased, total biomass, carotenoid and chlorophyll contents tended to increase, and the highest in 65 µmol m-2・s-1. As a result of this study, we found the most appropriate light environment for the C. argentea (65 µmol m-2・s-1), W. polystichoides (40 µmol m-2・s-1), D. mariesii (65 µmol m-2・s-1), it is expected to create an appropriate indoor growing and cultivation environment.
