Breeding of a Grafted Cactus Astrophytum spp. ‘Icing Star’
Abstract
The new cultivar of Astrophytum spp. ‘Icing Star’ was developed at Cactus and Succulent Research Institute, Gyeonggi-do A.R.E.S. in 2015. ‘Icing Star’ was crossed between breeding lines GA103143-32 and GA113026-3 and 59 seedlings were gained from in 2015. GA153144-9 had been selected among 5 breeding lines from 2016 to 2018 and it had tested for specific characters from 2019 to 2021. A cultivar was finally selected through the test of specific characters in 2021 and named as ‘Icing Star’. This cultivar has very small white wolly hair on the green color (RHS color chart, green group, 141A) surface. It has cylindrical shape stem with 4-5 ribs and brown spines on the body. The plant height and diameter 43.0 mm and 70.6 mm after 10 months from grafting, respectively. ‘Icing Star’ produces average 21.1 offsets per plant within 10 months for grafting, and it has excellent productivity.
