A New Cultivar of Euphorbia milii ‘Red Shine’ with Red Cyathophyll

Abstract

A new cultivar of Euphorbia milii ‘Red Shine’ was developed at Cactus & Succulent Research Institute, Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services (GARES) in 2021. A cross was made between ‘Mungmechoke’ and ‘GEM14196-1’ in 2018. ‘Mungmechoke’ produces pink cyathophylls, while ‘GEM14196-1’ has red cyathophylls and produces many lateral shoots. One seedling was selected, and its progeny was evaluated for specific characteristics through pedigree selection, and the final selection was made from 2019 to 2021. The cultivar ‘Red Shine’ has red (RHS color chart, 45B) cyathophylls. It has less the number of lateral shoots, average 11.2 and longer plant height, average 15.8 cm, than those of the ‘Red Pang’. The average width of cyathophyll is 2.4 cm. Leaves were 6.4 cm long, and 3.2 cm wide. These morphological characteristics of the cultivar can be maintained through vegetative propagation of lateral shoots.
